Media Landscapes

by Kat Huang

Media Landscapes explore different corners of the Internet where niche communities congregate—for example, the Subtle Asian Traits meme group, “langblr” language learning enthusiasts on Tumblr, or certain smaller subreddits. These digital spaces have the power to enact offline change, exemplified by k-pop stans on Twitter and TikTok dramatically inflating the expected attendance at Trump’s recent rally in Tulsa. In our column, we will delve into the social dynamics and cultures of these communities, how the constraints and features of platforms shape them, and their implications for the future.
